CartoMundi new developements

Jean-Luc Arnaud Directeur de recherche au CNRS, Maison Méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme, Aix-Marseille Université.

The public web site and the collaborative plateforme of CartoMundi, dedicated to the online promotion of the cartographic heritage, is full operational for about a year. Currently its database gathers more than 30 000 references. Furthermore, it proposes also about one thousand of reproductions. Thanks to agreements with the French National Library and the French National Geographic Institute, feeding of the database continues regularly.

After a presentation of the main functionalities of the plateforme, the second part of the paper will be dedicated to current upgrading and to the future of CartoMundi. These works deal with two main domains.

1. Mashup technique, to display the perimeters of each document on an online base map of the world. I will present the results and the difficulties encountered in the publication of an ancient cadastral map of Marseille.

2. Help to the map librarians for geolocalisation. One of the most important problem with the use of CartoMundi is the production of gereferenced data. To fix this problem we expect to develop a new tool easy to use for the map librarians. It will be based on visual interface rather than on datum.
